Meet Cuenca’s Artists & Shopping Tour
Begin at Café San Blas in Plaza San Sebastian, Mariscal Sucre 1-94
Plan to arrive between 8:30 am and 9 am and enjoy a cup of coffee or an early breakfast at your own expense. The program begins promptly at 9 am so please show up early.
This 4 hour educational program will take you on a journey to visit inside some of Cuenca Ecuador’s most exceptional tallers (artists workshops) throughout the El Centro historico district. Please note, this is not tourist grade merchandise but rather often very hard to find high end goods.
Imagine smelling fresh paint on a canvas, the earthy smell of freshly thrown pottery, the sound of a master craftsman working his/her trade in silver or tin, and sampling the best in exclusive Ecuadorian coffees and chocolates. This program is designed to educate and provide a unique and personal experience for each guest while supporting the local arts community in Cuenca and having some fun learning a little of Cuenca’s history along the way.
Bring a smile on your face, a bounce in your step, your shopping bag and plenty of spending money because during this interactive experience where you will meet the artists in person and learn directly from them about their craft and have the privilege to purchase works directly from the artist. Rare and unique photo opportunities are around every corner on this tour.
This program is limited to only 8 guests to allow for friendships to easily develop and can begin with a brief history of Cuenca’s modern art museum for new visitors to Cuenca before we start meeting the artists. Artisanos y Artisanas have created the following for us to experience: custom made tin and metal work, spectacular original jewelry of all sorts including that made of silver filigree with semi-precious stones, pottery, wood in-lay marquetry items, decorative and copper jewelry items, hand-made clothing and textiles. You will learn about the various qualities of alpaca and how to tell them apart and why one sweater is $12 and another $150, shop for custom made leather goods, original abstract and modern paintings, copper arts and crafts, and have a tasting session of exclusive organic coffees and chocolates.
Your tour ends around 1:00 with a delicious gourmet almuerzo luncheon (included in the tour price) from one of the most popular restaurants in Cuenca that is convenient to bus routes and taxis to get you to wherever you need to go for the rest of your day. Buen provecho y bienvenidos!
